The '73 Torch staff as a team has worked very hard for a quahty yearbook. Still we feel more could have been done; but, even so, we think this book
has many favorable assets. We hope the "73 Torch is pleasing to you.

I wish to thank all who contributed their ideas and work. In particular I am indebted to our advisors, Mr. Govoni and Mr. Bennett, who turned a crew
of green recruits, like myself, into some passable yearbook personnel. We are all grateful to our photographer, Pat Connolly, who supplied his coopera-
tion and talent to give us quality pictures.

Now that the '73 Torch is completed, I am very proud of what we have done and hope you are too.

Editor-in-chief

I

I want to extend my best wishes to all 1973 graduates. In our four years we have seen many changes, not merely in our school, but in our country
the world. We have seen everything from the first men on the moon, to a peace settlement in Vietnam. Let us not forget the good or the bad, so we
profit in our success and learn from our mistakes.

I Dedication |^^^^^|

Mr. Argenziano has gone far beyond any other member of the
faculty or administration. He has reached the students on a personal
basis. His door is always open; he knows almost everyone by name,
and understands our needs.

Being a man of outstanding personahty, he has brought to this
school a feehng of vitaUty and enthusiasm. He attends many of the
school functions and makes it a point to participate actively. Some
of Mr. Argenziano' s favorites are football and basketball games,
pep rallies, and dances. At the senior class pancake and sausage
supper he helped flip pancakes, and at school dances he gladly per-
forms his famous Indian War Dance.

Besides having plenty of school spirit, our principal involves him-
self in the more concrete aspects of school Ufe. Open campus, the
juke box, "The History of Rock" assembly, and the new class rank
system are a few of his achievements.

Mr. Argenziano is certainly a success. He has helped the school
and the students enormously. His talk is ''down to earth/' He
doesn't "put anyone down," neither does he use excess flattery. He's
honest, fair, and friendly. We admire and respect him. So, we dedi-
cate to Mr. Argenziano the 1973 Torch of Silver Lake High.

O Yet We Trust

Oh yet we trust that somehow good;

Will be the final goal of ill,

To pangs of nature, sins of will.

Defects of doubt, and taints of blood;

That nothing walks with aimless feet;

That not one life shall be destroyed.

Or cast as rubbish to the void.

When God hath made the pile complete;

That not a worm is cloven in vain;
That not a moth with vain desire

Is shrivelled in a fruitless fire,
Or but subserves another's gain.

Behold, we know not anything;
I can but trust that good shall fall

At last-far off-at last, to all,
And every winter change to spring.

So runs my dream: but what am I?

An infant crying in the night:

An infant crying for the light:

And with no language but a cry.

Alfred Lord Tennyson

There are no hopeless situations.
There are only men and women who
have grown hopeless about them.

I have poetry to express — but for no one to appreciate.
I have love to be given — but for no one to recieve.
I have Hfe to be shared — but for no one to be my

friend.
I desire, dream, and imagine — but in vain.
I breathe — but in necessity — as I eat and drinlc.
There once was a time when there was peace and I was well.

at ease.
Something happened though — or someone.
They say I had changed — "but something's gained —
but something's lost, in living every day."

TO a TV newscaster

Stop it!

stop showing me
those hands . . .

those impersonal
disciplined
precise hands . . .

folding, ever folding
in stoic order
that rectangle of
spangled cloth,
symbol of this,

folding, ever folding
above some dark
and heavy box
watched by dark
and heavy hearts . . .

stop it, I say.
Show me the living

Halt, maimed or whole . . .

A WORD FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

The Torch is a Mving monument to the stress that is placed on the individu-
al at Silver Lake. Your yearbook staff has designed this book to help you
remember the excellent opportunities afforded you, the student.

Silver Lake is your school. It was what you wanted it to be. The course of-
ferings and the extra-curricular programs are developed and planned to
meet your individual needs.

We hope that you turn the pages of The Silver Lake Torch so that you can
begin to unfold the mysteries and uncertainties that beset you, the student,
and perhaps more importantly, so that you can have lasting memories of
your school and become involved in society with the varied and challenging
opportunities presented you at Silver Lake.

1 leave you the words of Samuel Johnson:

"To improve the golden moment of opportunity, and catch the
good that is within our reach, is the great art of life."

The time before we grew so big

before we grew so tall.

Before our eyes were wide enough

to see beyond the wall.

How many years ago was that

it seems so long ago

when we lived it up

and watched our summers go.

There's a cold wind coming
I can tell.

Blowing back the memories
of times we loved so well.

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me.
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced of cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade.

And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate.

How charged with the punishments the

scroll,

I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

WHO IS AT MY WINDOW?

Who is at my window? Who? Who?
Go from my window! Go! Go!
Who calls there, like a stranger,
Go from my window! Go!

— Lord, I am here, a wretched mortal,
That for thy mercy doth cry and call
Unto thee, my lord celestial,
See who is at thy window, who? —

Remember thy sin, remember thy smart.
And also for thee what was my part.
Remember the spear that pierced my heart,
And in at my door thou shalt go.

I ask no thing of thee therefore.
But love for love, to lay in store.
Give my thy heart; I ask no more,
And in at my door thou shalt go.

Who is at my window? Who?
Go from my window! Go!
Cry no more thee, like a stranger,
But in at my door thou go!

Flying Green Papers

Flying green papers way up in the sky.

Don't be illusive; don't pass me by,

My fingers are itching with thoughts of you.

And all the fabulous things I could do.

I'm of your religion Mathematics baptized.

You're kindly; I see it in Washington's eyes.

The wind is a-blowin'; I'm down on my knees.

Please green papers, please float down to me.
